2017 Children’s Defense Fund – Freedom School
Covenant’s second year of Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School started with HIGH expectations. Freedom School started on Monday, June 19 with 30 scholars, and ended with a celebration/graduation. We had Each morning, the scholars were greeted with breakfast, then Harambee, (a Kiswahili word for ” let’s pull together”), motivational exercise and chants. This year we had Level 1 and 2 classes of Level 2 scholars.
Week One started off with our guest Read Aloud readers: Ms. Sara Dixon, Director of Perrin Woods Promise; Ms Ruth M. Lawson, Administrative Mgr, Covenant UMC; Ms. Clara Copeland, Retired Springfield City School Teacher; Mr. John Brown, President Security National Bank. This week’s field trip was to Springfield’s Heritage Center.
Week Two started off with our guest Read Aloud readers: Rev. Adam Banks, Pastor, First Baptist Church; Rev. Eli Williams, CEO of Urban Light Ministries; Mr. Tom Loftis, Realtor; Rev. Ernest Brown, Pastor, St. John Missionary Baptist Church; Mayor Warren Copeland, Spfld. This week’s field trip was to the Chiller Ice Skating Rink, Spfld.
Week Three started off with our guest Read Aloud readers: Holiday; Ms. Lula Cosby, Realtor; Mr. Rick Inconvati, Professor Wittenberg Univ; Dr. Jean Harper, Retired Spfld City School Superintendent. This week’s field trip was to “On The Rise”.
Week Four started off with our guest Read Aloud readers: Mr. Ted VanderRoest, Director Spfld Foundation; Ms. Karen Howard, Author; Ms. Ruth M. Lawson, Administrative Mgr, Covenant UMC; Ms. Vancenia Rutherford, Retired college administrator. This week’s field trip was to Camp Wesley.
Week Five started off with our guest Read Aloud readers: Ms. Donna Hill, Student at Wittenberg Univ; Dr. Rev. Jocelyn Roper, Superintendent Miami Valley District; Ms. Patty Young, Professional Hairdresser, Young Hair, Inc; Mr. Phillip Sanders, Director of Urban Lights – Son Shine Club; Dean John Young, Wittenberg Univ; Ms. Joyce Chilton, Spfld City Commissioner. This week’s field trip was cancelled due to rain.
The scholars participated in a united march with other Freedom School organizations to bring awareness to federal programs being cut to feed children.
Week Six started off with our last week of Read Aloud readers: Ms. Marilyn Martin, United Way Information 211 Center; Ms. Ruth M. Lawson, Administrative Mgr, Covenant UMC; Mr Everett Evans, Army Retiree; Mr. Kenneth Brown, Drug & Alcohol Counselor at Premier Health Center; Nick Heimlich, Chief, Spfld Fire Department.
Later the scholars marched in with their caps and stolls in participation of the celebration ending their six weeks of hard work.
We are pleased to announce, that Covenant’s scholars increased their reading skills by several grades.
